Saturday update
After 2 games today we are still alive and will be one of four teams playing on Sunday.
The 4 remaining teams are London North, Oakridge, Wyoming and YOUR St. Thomas Cardinals.
Although the Cardinals lost a very tought 7-6 9-inning game against Oakridge, the boys bounced back to beat EBBA late this afternoon. The key inning was the top of the fifth when we scored 6 runs to break a 5-5 tie. Held the EBBA squad to 0 runs in the bottom of the inning and the 2-hr curfew kicked in to seal the deal.
We will however be in tough against a very strong Wyoming squad early tomorrow.
Sunday update
To be honest, I think expectations were low for this one as Wyoming had no problems against us during the regular season. I don't think the boys got that message though since they came out flying batting through the entire order in the top of the fist and surprised Wyoming with 4 runs. Wyoming seemed a bit nervous and the Cardinals were playing with no fear. Despite giving up a couple runs in the bottom of the first, the Cardinals led 4 2 after 2 innings. The Cards scored another in the top of the third but Wyoming scratched out 4 in the bottom to take a 6-5 lead.
Undeterred, the Cardinals battled back to tie it at 6 and then took a one run lead into the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately , a single and triple later it was all square and not looking good. The Cardinals intentionally loaded the bases and deployed the 5-infielder strategy to hopeful cut the winning run down at home, but a super-slow roller was all it took - despite a valiant attempt - to drive home the winning run.
Despite the loss, it was a really solid weekend for the Cardinals and hopefully they will carry this forward to the OBAs in Simcoe.
Go Cards Go!
